New CLP Regulation

In conjunction with the NEW CLP (Classification, Labelling and Packaging) regulation, VOW have decided to take the opportunity to give the 2Work range of chemicals labels a new fresh and professional look. 2work offers a range of cleaning products designed to give you the best in affordable, effective, professional cleaning and will now also comply with the new Classification, Labelling and Packaging Regulation.

What is CLP?

CLP is the new legislation for the classification, labelling and packaging of substances and mixtures [EC no. 1272/2008]. CLP will officially replace CHIP (Chemicals, Hazard Information and Packaging Supply) on 1st  June 2015.

Why are these changes taking place?

CLP is a global legislation replacing the old European legislation and applies to all chemicals, including retail and professional cleaning products.The risk of hazard to eyes and skin has been highlighted and the chemical thresholds to trigger Hazard Warning Symbols in the classification procedure have been lowered for chemicals that could potentially cause adverse effects. This means that more products will now have a Hazard Warning Symbol. Many products will increase in hazard perception and many end-users will see Corrosion Symbols appear on many regularly used products due to the newly lowered level that triggers the eye damage warning. The products have NOT changed; the threshold of potential hazardous classification has changed.

How will I know the changes?

You will be able to see the new hazard symbols on all products. Please see below the old symbols and the new symbols:

  • Risk (R) phrases will change to Hazard Statements(H)
  • Safety (S) phrases will change to Precautionary Statements (P)
  • NEW Safety data sheets(SDS) will be available.

This means the user of the chemical needs to read the labels and NEW Safety Data Sheets carefully to fully understand the risks. Users cannot identify the hazard from the symbol alone.

What do you do next?

Once chemicals have been distributed with the new labels, the user needs to download the new SDS sheet and either a (1)member of staff/management/owner or (2) paid consultant/advisor with no commercial interest, needs to carry out a risk assessment. Distributors–this includes your premises, when storing and transporting, all sites must be risk assessed.

What happens if I still have receive chemicals with the old CHIP labelling?

All manufacturers must provide newly labelled substances from 1st June,however there will be a 2 year grace period for the new CLP to come into full effect.

Things to remember!

  • Don’t panic–products with the old labels can still be used as long as SDS sheets are downloaded and readily available.
  • Products have NOT changed, the classification has.
  • Some products that were not classed as a hazard before may now have warnings and new symbols.
  • Once the user has received newly labelled products, new SDS sheets should be downloaded and new training received.
